Don’t blame the child. Don’t blame the teacher. Don’t blame the coach. Blame the system.
If you’re a parent reading this article, picture yourself working a full day at the office with all the demands, expectations and stress. You have meetings, deadlines and a boss hovering over you to give your best each day.
Now picture after a long, stressful day you have to go the arena, field, court, (or whatever sport you play) with all same the demands, expectations and stress. Watching your every move is a demanding coach with the expectation to give your best each night.
Tomorrow….repeat. Is it realistic that you’ll perform and excel in both? It’s doubtful.
This scenario is what our student/athletes are dealing with every day. School is a regimented environment that works on its own timeline. Classes run all day. Homework needs to get done. Projects are due. Tests are coming up and don’t forget about exams in the not-too-distant future.
Sports work independently from your academic goals. Training, practices and games are scheduled. (Bonus…the older you get, the later at night you’re playing!) It doesn’t leave much time to get your rest or work done. Miss a day of school for a tournament or travel game and you’re going to have to catch up somehow.
ENTER THE WORLD OF THE SPORTS ACADEMY
The model is simple:
- Create an environment where the teachers and coaches work together in the best interest of the student/athlete.
- Create an environment where the student/athlete is given the tools and timelines to succeed in both academics AND sport.
- Create an environment of like-minded kids, aspiring for greatness in school and athletics, pushing each other to be their best in the classroom and in the game.
When traditional schooling and athletics are failing your student/athlete, change the system!
